12 days in Asia, and I barely have anything to show for it. Mostly crap. We were working too hard, going to fast, and my head was spinning too quickly to get any good shots. This is about the best I could do. Sorry.
I came home to discover that Ian has called it quits. Very sad. Fiftymillimeter was my first exposure to the concept of a photoblog. He had posted a link on photo.net to this photo, and I couldn’t figure out what the hell was going on. It was a guy at the cleaners with his back to the camera. What was this guy smokin’? I kept coming back and looking at this shot, trying to figure out why someone would bother to shoot it, let alone post it for the whole damn world to see. Eventually, I came around to get it. The green glow of the florescents, the red of the smock, and the utter banality of the scene. It was lovely. A completely boring event made fascinating. I came back a few days later and found this shot, and I was totally hooked. This guy just walked into a damn dry cleaners and came out with two images that I couldn’t get out of my mind. Ian has an ability to take an ordinary scene and somehow paint it with color and light to make it captivating. It made me realize that I didn’t need to have a canyon or some other spectacular scene in front of me to make an image. Images are everywhere. You just need to find them. Thanks, Ian.
Today is my first day as a member of Stills, a group photoblog that Matt was nice enough to invite me to. Thanks, Matt. I’ll do my best to not embarrass you.
